BENIN ALTAR IVORY

(Circa 19th Century)

An ancestral shrine ivory tusk carved with historical, social and religious symbols in relief. The events depicted usually revolved around court life, ceremonies and icons. These tusks are usually mounted on elaborately sculpted bronze busts of predecessors.
