BENIN
WARRIOR
KING
A bronze sculpture of a warrior king
depicted in duplicate, (Janus style). He is depicted wearing a
complex basketry headwear (with a missing finial), an oblong face
with a mustache and a tab beard, his neck adorned with assorted
charms, including a bell. The warrior holds up a curved sword in
his right hand and a decapitated head in his left hand, his
traditional wrap tied at the left hip. Excellent casting and
craftsmanship. The thick casting, weight and style all suggest it
is very likely late 19th to the early 20th century. An exact
replica is in the collection of the National Museum in Lagos,
Nigeria. 18 inches tall.
