BENIN BRONZE CAULDRON
Circa 17th / 18th Century
A very important bronze ceremonial vessel
used in Ighue festival rituals. The cauldron is
skillfully molded, with a forged iron hinge holding the two
halves of the vessel together. A royal face and assorted animals,
icons of power and court life, adorn the cauldron in relief. It
is estimated to be 300 to 400 years old. Metallurgy analyzed and
laboratory tested for age by McCrone Associates. 17th century,
+/- 75 years.
