BENINBRONZE SCULPTURE

(Olokun, god of water and wealth)

A bronze figure of Olokun, the sea god that also has the power to bestow wealth, according to Benin mythology. He is depicted in Benin royal regalia of coral beads, while holding a crocodile in his right hand. His mudfish legs (balanced on turtles) are symbolic of his ability to transform between earthly and water worlds. The utility of the various aquatic animals symbolize his dominance of the marine realm. According to both Yoruba snd Benin myth, Olokun lives in a palace under the sea with human and marine attendants. Exquisitely detailed, free standing sculpture.
